Reading/Writing/Spelling News

READING NEWS:

This week we will be working on building our reading stamina by reading long and strong from our book boxes. We will practice any strategy we have learned so far this year.

WRITING NEWS:

This week we continued our writer’s workshop personal essay writing. We will learn how to support big ideas from stories with evidence from their own lives by reading a couple of short stories and thinking about how they relate to our own lives. We will also learn how to create opinion statements for our own personal essays by using a graphic organizer to help us capture our thoughts on opinions.

SPELLING NEWS:

Spelling this week is letter blends (-or, -ar, -ore, and –oar). Every child gets a hard copy of their spelling words each Monday to take home to study. Please double check to make sure that they have it in their take home folder.

Study Island

We have started using a new computer program here at Roosevelt called Study Island. Every student from Mr. Peri and Mr. Grzesik’s class gets to go on this program at least 40 minutes a week to help practice some of the things we’ve been learning in the classroom. You can access this program at home and we would love to see your student using this at home 3 nights a week.

Your student’s log in information is:
User name: firstname.lastname@fps
Password: 123

Your student can practice any of the information that has been placed on their by one of their teachers.

Don’t forget to have your child try there best and if they get above a 75% on the information you get to take a break and play a game!

Reading/Writing/Spelling News

READING NEWS:

This week we learned that readers expect to learn alongside their characters. We will do this by thinking about life lessons Opal, the main character from “Because of Winn-Dixie”, learned and how we can attribute that to our lives. We will also learn that readers celebrate the lessons characters have learned that apply to their own lives. We will do that by reading in our partnerships and discussing those life lessons.

WRITING NEWS:

This week we started our next Writers Workshop unit, opinion/argument writing. We will learn how to collect ideas like an essayist. We will also complete a couple of sections in our data binders. The sections we will complete are our mid-year goals and our quick write reflection page. We will look at our first quick write piece and compare that to our most recent quick write piece to see how we have grown as a writer.

SPELLING NEWS:

HOMEWORK: Your child should be studying their spelling words every night as well as reading 20 minutes and recording it on their January reading log. Those reading logs will be due February 2nd.

Scholastic book orders will be placed on Friday January 30th. This is a change from what was placed on the book order. Please make sure to have those book orders in by this Friday. Don’t forget, the more books you and your child order help us get more books for our classroom.

Reading/Writing/Spelling News

READING NEWS:

This week, as a reader, we learned that characters have what it takes to overcome challenges. We will do this by reading the blurbs on the back of multiple books and thinking what kind of traits that character shows to get them through any potential challenges. We also will learn that secondary characters often teach the main character something. We will discuss the secondary characters from our mentor text ‘Because of Winn-Dixie’ and find out what effect they had on our main character.

WRITING NEWS:

This week we started our next Writers Workshop unit, opinion/argument writing. We completed our pre-assessment writing piece and will learn how to collect ideas like an essayist.

SPELLING NEWS:

No Spelling this week due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day as well as a records day on Friday.

HOMEWORK: Your child should be studying their spelling words every night as well as reading 20 minutes and recording it on their January reading log. Those reading logs will be due February 2nd.
